The objective of this lessons learnt exercise was to assess the advantages and disadvantages of the UNITAID grant governance and management model for project achievements in terms of medical (and related) outcomes, strategic decisions, the potential for collaboration between multiple MSF entities and to leverage the learnings for replication in future projects. The exercise showed that the project directly delivered a new, more effective, simpler and much cheaper treatment to patients across seven countries.

Since MSF’s return to Afghanistan in 2009, its operations on the ground have been monitored with a spyglass, unlike any other mission in this kind of environment. Consequently, OCs have been pushed to innovate but also remain critical vis-a-vis their respective strategies and the overall modus operandi of the Afghan mission. This evaluation of the single representation set up aims to analyse and learn from the current state of affairs of the Afghan mission in view of possible ways forward.

In 2010 the operational prospects for OCB (strategic operational plan) outlined the broad objectives for the coming three years and placed renewed attention on key medical areas including surgery and emergency and acute medicine, bringing about increased investment in two hospital programs where OCB focussed on providing emergency surgical care in third level facilities in Tabarre and Kunduz.

Since civil unrest and violence erupted in countries across Northern Africa and the Middle East (referred as NAME in the document) teams from the five MSF OCs (Operational Centres) have been assisting the populations. OCB has mainly been active in Egypt, Bahrain, Libya and Italy (Lampedusa with the influx of migrants from the Northern African regions). Activities and challenges have varied from one context to another. The overall aim of the mapping/compilation is to describe all of OCB’s activities from January to August 2011, in relation to the unrests.

Variable experience with handover and internal debates about MSF responsibility to patients led OCG to propose an evaluation of the handover process, to learn from experience and inform policy and practice. A qualitative review was carried out through interviews, case studies in Cameroon and Laos, and review of other vertical and integrated HIV projects.

This evaluation was requested by MSF CH Geneva and focuses on the pertinence, efficacy and impact of the sexual violence project in Guatemala. The motivation to evaluate this program stemmed from difficulties at the initial stages of the project in realizing the goals through the original strategies chosen. The results answer key questions about the added value of the intervention regarding the problem of the sexual violence (SV).

Cyclone Nargis was a strong tropical cyclone that caused the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Myanmar. An MSF intervention started 72 hours after the disaster with two teams, one in Bogalay and one in Pyapon. Due to political restrictions the real operational activities only started 10 days after. MSF-CH wanted to capture the lessons learned out of this major response that was considered a successful intervention.
